Crikey

Melissa is coordinating a project with Crikey which aims to encourage health professionals, particularly those with an interest in public health, to contribute to public debate. The project arose out of discussions between public health academic Professor Simon Chapman, journalist Ray Moynihan, Melissa and the Crikey team. Writer and editor Dr Mark Ragg was also involved in initial discussions. Crikey stories generated through the project can be downloaded below.

Australian Rural Doctor

Melissa regularly contributes in-depth features to Australian Rural Doctor magazine. She covers clinical, public health, policy and social issues which are relevant to rural doctors and their communities. Stories have included the impact of a devastating bushfire on the NSW town of Junee, efforts to address alcohol-related harm in rural areas, and the difficulties confronting overseas trained doctors, who have become the mainstay of services in many rural communities. The Bulletin

Between 1998 and 2003, Melissa wrote a fortnightly health column for The Bulletin magazine, and also contributed in-depth feature articles. These examined issues ranging from the plight of general practice, to Australians’ pill-popping, lessons from the history of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), and common health myths. Australian Doctor

Between 1999 and 2005, Melissa wrote a regular column for Australian Doctor magazine, which critically examined media coverage of various health issues. The media, the medical and health professions, and pharmaceutical companies all provided plenty of pickings for the column. Click here for some of these columns.

From 1999 to 2002, Melissa also regularly contributed in-depth profiles to Australian Doctor.
